The Town of Eberswalde

The history of Eberswalde, nowadays the administrative centre of the Barnim district has been marked by trade and industry. As early as in the 19th century the town boasted a good reputation as a spa resort due to the forests and lakes in its surroundings. With the opening of the railway line from Berlin to Szczecin in 1842, the popular destination got within easy reach for many a tourist.

The festival week on occasion of the 750th anniversary of Eberswalde will be a highlight in our tourist area, presenting a lot of attractions, events and special surprises from 28th May to 6th June 2004. St Mary Magdalene Church, the "Museum at the Eagle's Chemist's" (Adlerapotheke), the botanical garden of forestry and the famous housing estate around the brass foundry, with buildings showing the influence of the Bauhaus school, are among the most interesting sights in Eberswalde. The most popular destinations are the zoo and the Family Park of Eberswalde. The latter was laid out on the former area of the Brandenburg Landscape Gardening Exhibition of 2002. Eberswalde Zoo has been awarded the title "Best Small-size Zoo in Germany". It boasts an exciting lion enclosure and has a lot of attractive offers for families, too. The Landscape Gardening Exhibition introduced Eberswalde and the Barnim to the broad public. Thousands of visitors came to take part in numerous events or to visit special attractions such as a unique fairy-tale theme park and the "Boar's Crane", which alludes to the name of Eberswalde, the town in the "boar's forest". All these attractions have been preserved in the Family Park of Eberswalde. New attractions are constantly being added. The new indoor fun pool "baff" provides entertainment in fun and play pools, on the giant slide as well as in whirlpool baths. Special programmes for fitness and wellness are offered.
